Pumping Iron

Right, Bell and trainer Reggie Peacock (left) warm up.The City Paper’s Health and Wellness section boasts experimentation and friendly competition. City Paper Publisher Mark Jacobs and Mayor Mike Bell met bright and early one morning last week at Super Fitness to test the knowledge and curriculum of two of the area’s finest fitness trainers.

Keeping them on their toes

First up, ReggiePeacock’s cardio- oriented stretching and calisthenics. Peacock, an advocate of flexibility and endurance, operates Majestic Lifestyle and Fitness at 618 Adams St. While most workout enthusiasts warm up with simple—sometimes halfhearted—stretches, Peacock uses fast-paced movements to increase flexibility, and prepare the body for the workout ahead. During the session, Mark jokingly tells Peacock that he should lower the reps and Mike begins to cramp, but both participants still finish strong. Peacock says this training method is appropriate for peo- ple of all ages and skill levels, and ends his training with encouraging words. “Always respect and honor yourself,” Peacock advises.

Testing their strength

So, both iron men made it through round one, but the pace picked up when our contestants stepped into the free- weight area with American Mobile Fit- ness, 5133 Main St. Sylvania, owner Gregg Schwartz for some high-intensity circuit training. Both men simultane-ously did each exercise without break. They thrashed through a line up of el-evated push-ups, side-step lunge rows, dips and cleans, followed by balance drills. Im- pressively, neither participant took a break. Maybe things had just be- come a bit more competitive.

The power of the mayor

Then it was timefor Mayor Bell to teach the pros a thing or two. The former UT linebacker turned politician still goes after the weights hard, and broke down his daily routine. After a motorcycle accident, Bell was left with a bum shoulder, so he began to isolate his arms on every upper body exercise. Even though he is back to full health, he still swears by the routine. On this particular day, the mayor completed four sets of isolated shoulder presses, chest presses and lat pulldowns, starting at 20 reps and dropping each set by five. But, before we leave, Bell proves to us he can rep the entire stack (300 pounds–150 isolated on each arm) on the chest press machine. “The next time you think about writing something stupid, remember this,” Bell says before moving the stack. Duly noted, Mayor Bell, by all TCP staff- ers, but we can’t speak for Mr. Hildo.
