Sailors of fortune

During the age of empire, out of which our country was born, a voyage at sea could make a poor man rich, or make a rich man dead. The Toledo Museum of Art, in honor of the current Perry's Victory exhibit, is presenting the Tall Ships film series.

The first film of the series, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World, will screen on Thursday, August 30, 7pm. The naval action-adventure stars Russell Crowe as the captain of the British frigate H.M.S. Surprise, who leads his consternated crew around the coast of South America in pursuit of the French battleship Acheron. Director Peter Weir is a master of breathtaking landscape cinematography, and a student of human conflict—he marries both into a film about claustrophobic tension surrounded by pristine wilderness on land and sea.

The September 6 film, Persuasion, was adapted from the Jane Austen novel of the same name, and boasts lavish costumes and cinematography. In the film, a young woman rejects a marriage proposal because her suitor is poor, only to regret that decision when he finds wealth in the Royal Navy. Watching the film is like a primer for Jane Austen, a vintage fashion show, and a peek into history all rolled into one. Friday, September 6, 7pm.
