There is simply no better film for introducing wannabe storytellers to the medium of cinema than Citizen Kane. A thinly-veiled skewering of William Randolph Hearst and his outsized ego, this film tells the full life story of Charles Foster Kane, a boy thrust into wealth. Building a newspaper empire and crushing his enemies (and friends!) isn’t enough for Kane, he ultimately realizes he wants only the one thing he can’t have.
Full of cinematography tricks that established modern moviemaking, a brilliant script and dynamic acting by director/star Orson Welles, this movie so enraged W.R. Heart that he essentially blackballed Welles from having any creative control in Hollywood ever again. Presented in conjunction with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra’s performance of “Once Upon A Castle.”
