What It’s About: A so-weird-it-must-be true caper about a mortician living in small town Texas (played with aplomb by Jack Black) who kills a rich widow for her fortune and then works to create the ruse that she is still alive.
What We Like: This film is likely too quirky to reap any Oscar nominations, but if the Academy could ever get over its aversion to comedy, Black would be a shoo-in. Linklater and Black have always worked magic together (“School of Rock” remains a career highlight for both artists), and “Bernie” is hands-down the best dark comedy to be released so far this year. To be sure, this will be too morbid and weird for some, but those who like their humor served corpse cold will find much to appreciate.
