MLK Kitchen For The Poor Celebrates 55th Anniversary

Celebrate 55 years of MLK Kitchen For The Poor at their Spring Gala and Fundraiser on Sat., May 4 from 6 to 11 pm at The Pinnacle

Tickets for the event cost $100 and can be purchased on Eventbrite.

“We can promise fabulous music, great food, wonderful people and a joyous evening – all to support the Kitchen’s mission to feed the hungry,” MLK Kitchen wrote on the website.

The money raised at the fundraiser will be used to fund the expansion of their building, according to Harvey Savage of MLK Kitchen.

Since 1969, the organization has been working to provide meals to those in need in the Toledo community.

Savage’s father, Harvey Sr. started the organization in 1969 after witnessing the stark reality of food insecurity.

“He saw a guy eating out of the garbage can in the back of his house and he invited him in and fed him,” Savage said. “And with that it inspired him to open the kitchen.”

The non-profit organization provides both hot meals as well as food baskets to community members in need.

The kitchen, located on 650 Vance St. is open Monday through Thursday. Hot meals are provided from noon to 1:30pm and anyone who comes to the kitchen to get a meal will also receive a food basket. Food baskets can also be picked up from 9 am to 11 am.

“Last year we did about 35,000 meals. We’ve done probably close to 2 million meals during our 55 years of service,” Savage said.
